ANATOMY OF A SKATEBOARD

In this episode, Cam will be dissecting the skateboard, giving you a basic overview of each part.

Keep your eyes peeled, as more in-depth videos on each specific part will be coming soon.

We'd like to say a big thank you to Butters Skate Shop for letting us film in their shop and Cam from Rubicon for his time and expertise.

EVERY SKATEBOARD

PART EXPLAINED

DECK

The deck is made by glueing and pressing 7 layers (or plies) of maple and features a nose and a tail (the tail is slightly shorter than the nose).

The size of the deck refers to the width of the board; common skateboard deck sizes are 8", 8.125", 8.25" and 8.5".

A man with a beard and mustache holds a skateboard inside a skate shop. The shop has skateboards displayed on a yellow wall behind him and protective gear on the table in front of him.

The holes in the skateboard are mounting holes, these are how you’ll mount your trucks to your board.

The longitudinal curvature of the board is called the concave, which can be low, medium or high and affects how the skateboard feels to ride.

Grip Tape

The grip tape is the sandpaper style coating that goes on top of the deck, it helps you stick to your board and perform tricks.

BOLTS

The bolts are used to attach your trucks to your board and usually have Phillips Head or Allen Key recesses.

The Enuff Completes place 2 silver bolts at the front of the board to make it easier to tell the ends apart.

TRUCKS

Skateboard trucks are a steering device that attach to the board, they can also be used for grinding.

Tightening the trucks will restrict movement making turning more difficult, while loosening them will allow for more sensitive turning.

BEARINGS

Bearings sit inside the wheel, helping the wheel stay on the truck and dictating how fast the wheel can spin.

Five ball bearings stacked on a wooden surface with a wood background.

WHEELS

Four white roller skate wheels with red centers, arranged on a wooden surface.

Wheels come in different sizes and hardnesses depending on what style of skating you are doing. Like every other part in this overview we’ll be elaborating on this in a future episode.
